وَ كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَقَدِ اعْتَزَلَ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ مَنْ لَيْسَ فِي يَدِهِ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص مِثْلُ الَّذِي فِي يَدِي فَقَدْ أَخْبَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص بِمَا هُوَ كَائِنٌ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَكُونَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ كَسَرْتُ سَيَفِي وَ جَلَسْتُ فِي بَيْتِي وَ اتَّهَمْتُ الرَّأْيَ عَلَى الدِّينِ إِذَا لَمْ يَصْلُحْ لِي مَعْرُوفٌ آمُرُ بِهِ وَ لَا مُنْكَرٌ أَنْهَى عَنْهُ
وَ لَعَمْرِي مَا طَلَبْتُ إِلَّا الدُّنْيَا وَ لَا اتَّبَعْتُ إِلَّا الْهَوَى فَإِنْ تَنْصُرْ عُثْمَانَ مَيِّتاً فَقَدْ خَذَلْتَهُ حَيّاً فَمَا أَخْرَجَنِيَ اللَّهُ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ وَ لَا صَيَّرَنِي إِلَى شَكٍّ إِلَى آخِرِ مَا كَتَبَ.
And Muhammad Bin Maslama wrote to him, ‘As for after, this command has been isolated by the one who hasn’t in his hands from Rasool-Allah-saww like that which is in my hands. Rasool-Allah-saww had informed me with what would be happening before it happened. So, when it did happen, my sword broke and I sat in my house, and I was accused of the view upon the religion. Then it was not correct for me any good I could enjoin with nor any evil I could forbid from it. And by my life! You do not seek except the world, nor do you pursue except the personal desires, so if you helping Usman when he is dead, you had forsaken him when he was alive. So, Allah-azwj neither Extract me from a Bounty nor Made me come to a doubt’ – up to the end of what he wrote’’. [23]
