وَ رَوَى نَصْرٌ عَنْ رِجَالِهِ قَالَ: لَمَّا بَلَغَ الْقَوْمُ إِلَى مَا بَلَغُوا إِلَيْهِ قَامَ عَلِيٌّ ع خَطِيباً فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَ أَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَ قَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ بَلَغَ بِكُمُ الْأَمْرُ وَ بِعَدُوِّكُمْ مَا قَدْ رَأَيْتُمْ وَ لَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا آخِرُ نَفَسٍ وَ إِنَّ الْأُمُورَ إِذَا أَقْبَلَتِ اعْتُبِرَ آخِرُهَا بِأَوَّلِهَا وَ قَدْ صَبَرَ لَكُمُ الْقَوْمُ عَلَى غَيْرِ دِينٍ حَتَّى بَلَغَنَا مِنْهُمْ مَا بَلَغَنَا وَ أَنَا غَادٍ عَلَيْهِمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ أُحَاكِمُهُمْ إِلَى اللَّهِ
قَالَ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَدَعَا عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ وَ قَالَ يَا عَمْرُو إِنَّمَا هِيَ اللَّيْلَةُ حَتَّى يَغْدُوَ عَلَيْنَا بِالْفَضْلِ فَمَا تَرَى قَالَ إِنَّ رِجَالَكَ لَا يَقُومُونَ لِرِجَالِهِ وَ لَسْتَ مِثْلَهُ وَ هُوَ يُقَاتِلُكَ عَلَى أَمْرٍ وَ أَنْتَ تُقَاتِلُهُ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ أَنْتَ تُرِيدُ الْبَقَاءَ وَ هُوَ يُرِيدُ الْفَنَاءَ وَ أَهْلُ الْعِرَاقِ يَخَافُونَ مِنْكَ إِنْ ظَفِرْتَ بِهِمْ وَ أَهْلُ الشَّامِ لَا يَخَافُونَ عَلِيّاً إِنْ ظَفِرَ بِهِمْ
وَ لَكِنْ أَلْقِ إِلَى الْقَوْمِ أَمْراً إِنْ قَبِلُوهُ اخْتَلَفُوا وَ إِنْ رَدُّوهُ اخْتَلَفُوا ادْعُهُمْ إِلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ حَكَماً فِيمَا بَيْنَكَ وَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ بَالِغٌ بِهِ حَاجَتَكَ فِي الْقَوْمِ وَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَزَلْ أَدَّخِرُ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ لِوَقْتِ حَاجَتِكَ إِلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَ مُعَاوِيَةُ ذَلِكَ وَ قَالَ لَهُ صَدَقْتَ.
And it is reported by Nasr, from his men who said, ‘When the people reached to what they had reached to, Ali-asws stood up to address. He-asws praised Allah-azwj and extolled upon Him-azwj and said: ‘O you people! The matter has reached with you all and your enemies what you have seen, and there does not remain from them except the last breath, and the affairs when they come, the last of it takes a lesson from its first; and the people engaged in combat with you upon other than religion until we reached from them what we reached, and I-asws shall be going to them tomorrow early morning, to let them be Judged by Allah-azwj’’. He (the narrator) said, ‘That reached Muawiya, and he called Amro Bin Al-Aas and said, ‘O Amro! But rather it is the (one) night (left) until they come to us with the superiority. So, what is your view? ’ He said, ‘Your men cannot stand to his-asws men, and you aren’t like him-asws, and he-asws is fighting you upon a matter, and you are fighting him-asws upon something else. You want to live and he-asws want the annihilation, and the people of Al-Iraq are fearing from you that you might be victorious with them, and the people of Syria are not fearing Ali-asws that he-asws might be victorious with them. But, cast such a matter to the people that if they accept it, they would be differing, and if they reject it, they would (still) be differing. Call them to the Book of Allah-azwj as a judge regarding what is between you and them, for you will be reaching your needs among the people, and I have not ceased to reserve this matter for a time of your need to it’. Muawiya recognised that and said to him, ‘You speak the truth’’. [53]
