(The book) ‘Al Kharaij Wa Al Jaraih’ – It is reported from Muhammad Bin Zayd Al Razy who said
‘I was in the service of Al-Reza-asws when Al-Mamoun had made him-asws the heir-apparent. A man from the Kharijites came to him-asws, there was a poisoned knife in his hand, and he had said to his companion, ‘By Allah-azwj! I will go to this one who claims that he-asws is a son-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww! And he-asws tends to enter to see this tyrant among the ones who enter, and I shall ask him-asws about his-asws argument. If there was an argument for him-asws (fine), or else I shall rest the people from him-asws’ (stab him-asws). He came to him-asws and sought permission to see him-asws. He-asws permitted for him. Abu Al-Hassan-asws said to him: ‘I-asws shall answer you about your issue based upon a condition that you will be loyal with it to me-asws’. He said, ‘And what is this condition? ’ He-asws said: ‘If I-asws were to answer you with an answer, convincing you and you agree with it, you will break that which is in your sleeve, and you will throw it away’. The Kharijite remained perplexed, and he extracted the knife and broke it, then said, ‘Inform me about your-asws entering to see this tyrant among the ones who enter to him, and they are Kafirs in your-asws view while you-asws as a son-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww. What carries you-asws upon (doing) this? ’
Abu Al-Hassan-asws said: ‘What is your view? Are they more Kafirs in your view or the governor of Egypt and the people of his kingdom? Aren’t they upon a state they are claiming that they are unitarians, and those did not believe in the Oneness of Allah-azwj, and did not recognise that Yusuf-as Bin Yaqoub-as being a Prophet-as, son-as of a Prophet-as? He-as said to the governor, and he was a Kafir: ‘Make me (in charge) upon the treasures of the land, I am a knowledgeable protector [12: 55]. And he-as used to sit with the Pharaohs-la, while I-asws am a man from the sons-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww. He (Al-Mamoun) has forced me-asws upon this matter and coerced me-asws upon it. So, what is that which you are disliking and are avenging upon me-asws? ’
He said, ‘There is no fault upon you-asws. I hereby testify that you-asws are a son-asws of the Prophet-saww of Allah-azwj, and you-asws are truthful! ’’[143]
