ِيُبَايِعُوهُ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ فَأَصْبَحُوا فَلَمْ يُوَافِ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَرْبَعَةٌ
فَقُلْتُ لِسَلْمَانَ مَنِ الْأَرْبَعَةُ فَقَالَ أَنَا وَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ وَ الْمِقْدَادُ وَ الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ الْعَوَّامِ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُمْ عَلِيٌّ ع مِنَ اللَّيْلَةِ الْمُقْبِلَةِ فَنَاشَدَهُمْ فَقَالُوا نُصْبِحُكَ بُكْرَةً فَمَا مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ أَتَاهُ غَيْرُنَا ثُمَّ أَتَاهُمُ اللَّيْلَةَ الثَّالِثَةَ فَمَا أَتَاهُ غَيْرُنَا
فَلَمَّا رَأَى عَلِيٌّ ع غَدْرَهُمْ وَ قِلَّةَ وَفَائِهِمْ لَهُ لَزِمَ بَيْتَهُ وَ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى الْقُرْآنِ يُؤَلِّفُهُ وَ يَجْمَعُهُ فَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ حَتَّى جَمَعَهُ وَ كَانَ فِي الصُّحُفِ وَ الشِّظَاظِ وَ الْأَكْتَافِ وَ الرِّقَاعِ
فَلَمَّا جَمَعَهُ كُلَّهُ وَ كَتَبَهُ بِيَدِهِ تَنْزِيلَهُ وَ تَأْوِيلَهُ وَ النَّاسِخَ مِنْهُ وَ الْمَنْسُوخَ بَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ اخْرُجْ فَبَايِعْ فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ عَلِيٌّ ع أَنِّي مَشْغُولٌ وَ قَدْ آلَيْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي يَمِيناً أَنْ لَا أَرْتَدِيَ بِرِدَاءٍ إِلَّا لِلصَّلَاةِ حَتَّى أُؤَلِّفَ الْقُرْآنَ وَ أَجْمَعَهُ
فَسَكَتُوا عَنْهُ أَيَّاماً فَجَمَعَهُ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ وَ خَتَمَهُ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى النَّاسِ وَ هُمْ مُجْتَمِعُونَ مَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَنَادَى عَلِيٌّ ع بِأَعْلَا صَوْتِهِ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَزَلْ مُنْذُ قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مَشْغُولًا بِغُسْلِهِ ثُمَّ بِالْقُرْآنِ حَتَّى جَمَعْتُهُ كُلَّهُ فِي هَذَا الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ
فَلَمْ يُنْزِلِ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ آيَةً مِنْهُ إِلَّا وَ قَدْ جَمَعْتُهَا وَ لَيْسَتْ مِنْهُ آيَةٌ إِلَّا وَ قَدْ أَقْرَأَنِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص وَ عَلَّمَنِي تَأْوِيلَهَا
ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ع لِئَلَّا تَقُولُوا غَداً إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هذا غافِلِينَ
ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ عَلِيٌّ ع لَا تَقُولُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنِّي لَمْ أَدْعُكُمْ إِلَى نُصْرَتِي وَ لَمْ أُذَكِّرْكُمْ حَقِّي وَ لَمْ أَدْعُكُمْ إِلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ مِنْ فَاتِحَتِهِ إِلَى خَاتِمَتِهِ
فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ مَا أَغْنَانَا بِمَا مَعَنَا مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ عَمَّا تَدْعُونَا إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عَلِيٌّ ع بَيْتَهُ
وَ قَالَ عُمَرُ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ أَرْسِلْ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ فَلْيُبَايِعْ فَإِنَّا لَسْنَا فِي شَيْءٍ حَتَّى يُبَايِعَ وَ لَوْ قَدْ بَايَعَ أَمِنَّاهُ
فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَجِبْ خَلِيفَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ ع سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ مَا أَسْرَعَ مَا كَذَبْتُمْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّهُ لَيَعْلَمُ وَ يَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ حَوْلَهُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ وَ رَسُولَهُ لَمْ يَسْتَخْلِفَا غَيْرِ
-ra, and Abu Zarr-ra, and Al-Miqdad-ra, and Al-Zubeyr Bin Al-Awwam. Then Ali-asws came to them in the next night, and adjured them. They said, ‘We shall come tomorrow morning’. But, not one of them came to him-asws apart from us-ra. Then he-asws went to them the third night. But no one came to him-asws apart from us-ra. When Ali-asws saw their betrayal and scarcity of their loyalty to him-asws, he-asws stayed in his-asws house and turned to the Quran, compiling it, and collecting it. He-asws did not come out from his-asws house until he-asws had collected it, and it used to be in the papers, and the fragments, and the (animal) shoulder bones, and the palm leaves. When he-asws had collected all of it and written it with his-asws hand, and interpreted it, and the Abrogating from it and the Abrogated, Abu Bakr sent a message to him, ‘Come out and pledge allegiance’. Ali-asws sent a message to him: ‘I-asws am busy and have sworn a vow upon myself-asws that I-asws will not cloak myself with a cloak except for the Salat, until I-asws have compiled the Quran and have collected it’. They were silent from him for days. He-asws collected it in one cloth and sealed it. Then he-asws came out to the people, and they were gathered with Abu Bakr in the Masjid of Rasool-Allah-saww. Ali-asws called out at the top of his-asws voice: ‘O you people! Since Rasool-Allah-saww passed away I-asws have been pre-occupied with washing him-saww, then with the Quran until I-asws have (now) collected it, all of it, in this one cloth. There is no Verse from it Allah-azwj Revealed unto His-azwj Prophet-saww except and I-asws have collected it, and there isn’t any Verse from it except and Rasool-Allah-saww had read it out to me-asws and taught me-asws its interpretation’. Then Ali-asws said: ‘Lest you might be saying tomorrow, ‘We were oblivious of this’ [7: 172]’. Then Ali-asws said to them: ‘You cannot be saying on the Day of Qiyamah that I-asws did not call you all to help me-asws, and I-asws did not make you realise my-asws rights, and I-asws did not call you to the Book of Allah-azwj, from its beginning to its end’. Then Umar said to him, ‘We are needless with what is with us from the Quran, from what you-asws are calling us to’. Then Ali-asws entered his-asws house. And Umar said to Abu Bakr, ‘Send a message to Ali-asws and let him-asws pledge allegiance, for we aren’t in anything until he-asws pledges allegiance, and if he-asws were to pledge allegiance, we would be secure’. Abu Bakr send a message to him-asws, ‘Answer the caliph of Rasool-Allah-saww’. The messenger came to him-asws and said that to him-asws. Ali-asws said to him: ‘Glory be to Allah-azwj! How quickly you have belied upon Rasool-Allah-saww! Surely he knows, and so do the ones around him that Allah-azwj and His-azwj Rasool-saww did not make a Caliph apart from me-asws’. And the messenger went and informed him with what he-asws had said to him. He said, ‘Go and say to him-asws, ‘Answer to ‘Amir Al-Momineen’ Abu Bakr’. He
